Karl Lagerfeld's personal Kokeshi Auctioned at Sotheby's

"Designer Collectible"

The term "Designer Collectible" has taken on a whole new meaning for Lucie Kaas' iconic line of kokeshi dolls. Despite an estimated value of 100-150 euros, the hammer fell at an impressive 4,032 euros, equivalent to about 30,000 Danish kroner, for a Karl Kokeshi doll from the Danish company Lucie Kaas, which had been in Karl Lagerfeld's possession since 2016.

Sotheby's auction featured over 1,000 of Karl Lagerfeld's private belongings, including valuable books, silverware, his original drawings, famous paintings, and, of course, a Karl Kokeshi. When Lucie Kaas first launched the collection, Karl Lagerfeld was the creative director of Chanel, and the Karl Kokeshi was quickly spotted by people working closely with the legend, after which a copy was sent to Paris.

Designed by English artist Becky Kemp, the Karl Kokeshi was, and continues to be, a tribute to Karl for his exceptional contributions to fashion, art, and culture.
